My Kind of Holiday

-

Where did you spend your last holiday?

Cape Town.

What was the best thing you did while there?

Gate-crashed a private party on a luxury yacht. How we pulled that off still amazes me.

Your favourite city abroad and why?

It’s not a city, but I love Inhambane in Mozambique. It’s so relaxed and natural and the people are so humble and welcoming.

What must a first-time visitor see there?

Get on a boat and see the incredible expanses of clear water, massive sand dunes and sea life. Also, have a conversation with the locals — they made a lasting impression on me.

What should they not bother with?

Leave your heels and make-up at home.

And your worst to date? What happened?

On a farm near Richmond. We had to sleep in a barn, where odd-looking ticks decided I was a snack.

What is the best thing you have been given on holiday … or pinched from a hotel?

The Flamingo Bay Water Lodge made me a birthday cake and got one of their local guitarists in for a private show on one of their terraces, overlooking the sea. It was a great birthday present.

Who would be your fantasy holiday companion and why?

Maxwell. By the look of his Instagram account, he sure knows how to have fun on holiday. Plus he’s my favourite musician. It wouldn’t hurt to be stuck with him for a few days.

Your favourite restaurant, anywhere?

Haiku in Cape Town and Licorish in Bryanston. Unpretentious surroundings and incredible food.

One place you want to see before you die?

France. From food to wine to fashion and music, they have copious amounts of everything I love.

What do you avoid on holiday?

Hospital.

What’s your best piece of travel advice?

Go with people you won’t mind having in your memories for good.

One travel destination you would call “never again”?

That ghastly farm near Richmond!
