THE South African Institute of Chartered Accountant­s has appointed Terence Nombembe, the outgoing auditor-general, as CEO.

He will replace Matsobane Matlwa, who is leaving the institute to pursue personal business interests.

Nombembe qualified as a chartered accountant in 1990. Before becoming auditor-general seven years ago, he was a partner in a public practice, worked in internal audit and finance in the energy sector and was an accountant in the retail industry.

ETIENNE Stiglingh has been appointed group CEO for Open Learning Holdings. Stiglingh also holds the position of CEO of the Open Learning Group, a position he has been in since May 2012 and will continue to fill.

Stiglingh comes from a banking environmen­t and holds a BCom in business management from the University of Pretoria, a master’s degree in education from the University of Pretoria and an MBA from the University of Stellenbos­ch.

He has held positions in management at Absa Financial Services and Deloitte Consulting.

SCHNEIDER Electric has appointed James Shirley head of its solar business unit for Southern Africa.

Shirley began his university studies in Cape Town before moving to the US and switching to chemical engineerin­g at the Colorado School of Mines.

After working in Canada, the US and Peru on gold recovery projects, Shirley put engineerin­g on hold to pursue a career in sales and marketing management before returning to the field as general manager of Kayema Energy Solutions.

In 2012, Shirley was admitted to the Associatio­n of Energy Engineers.

DR Tanya Abrahamse, CEO of the South African National Biodiversi­ty Institute, has been appointed to the United Nations secretary-general’s scientific advisory board.

“We are very proud indeed that Sanbi’s CEO sits on this board for the UN,” said Nana Magomola, acting chairwoman of the institute’s board.

“I am honoured to have been nominated to this prestigiou­s advisory board and hope that I can contribute to forge stronger links between science and policy towards human wellbeing and sustainabl­e developmen­t,” said Abrahamse.
