Your favourite city abroad and why? San Antonio, Texas. The food, the Mexican influence and the colours will shock your senses.

What must a first-time visitor see there? The Riverwalk (a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River) is incredible. Almost 15km of paths dotted with restaurant­s and Mexican music.

What was your best holiday ever? The Paradise Sun Hotel on Praslin Island in the Seychelles. It’s a perfect place to rejuvenate. It’s not pretentiou­s, has great character, beautiful water and there’s nothing to do! What What was happened? your worst holiday ever? A September in Mauritius. Rain, rain, rain and the children got chicken pox. Who would be your fantasy holiday companion and why? My beautiful wife of course. If she couldn’t make it, Hilary Swank (with my wife’s permission).

Your favourite restaurant, anywhere? Summer Lodge, Dorset, has phenomenal food. Executive chef Steven Titman is so talented. What is the most exotic dish you’ve ever eaten on holiday? Birds’ nest soup and a soup made of frogs’ thyroids, which is apparently great for one’s voice but did nothing for me. One you die? place you want to see before

Mendoza Province in Argentina. Have moments you as had a any traveller? embarrassi­ng On a recent business trip to Nigeria, I packed two left shoes. I had to wear a suit and takkies everywhere because I could not find shoes in my size. I told everyone I’d just had an operation on my feet.

What do you avoid on holiday?

Franchise restaurant­s and theme parks.

What’s your best piece of travel advice?

Don’t forget your passport.
