NORTH-West University has appointed Professor Dan Kgwadi vice-chancellor and Professor Herman van Schalkwyk vice-principal.
Professor Marlene Verhoef, executive adviser on strategies and projects in the office of the vice-chancellor, has been appointed institutional registrar for six years from January 1 2014.
Kgwadi, rector of the Mahikeng campus, will assume the new position on June 1 2014 for six years. Prior to his appointment as rector in 2005, he served as senior manager at the National Nuclear Regulator and was the head of the physics department at the Vaal University of Technology.
Kgwadi has been a member of numerous professional bodies and chaired the education subgroup of the South African Institute of Physics. He was appointed to the Umalusi council, where he serves as deputy chairman and chairman of the assessment standard committee.
Kgwadi holds a BSc (physics and chemistry), MSc (physics), MPhil (environmental law and management) and a PhD (physics ed).
He also holds an honorary PhD in management from Hanseo University in South Korea.
Van Schalkwyk is a prominent agricultural economist who has been involved in many provincial and national institutions, including the National Agriculture Marketing Council and the board of the Land Bank.
Verhoef is a well-known language specialist and serves on the Pan South African Language Board’s language tribunal.
Her responsibilities include overseeing the further consolidation of the functionally multilingual institutional language policy. She is also the official language ombudsman of North-West University.
