Director’s debut worst film of 2013
YAYA (1/10)
I RAJASEGARAN, a former assistant of M Rajesh, makes his debut as writer and director in
Ya Ya.
Playing the leads in this comedy drama are Mirchi Shiva and Santhaanam, who star alongside Paradesii stars Dhansika and Sandhya.
The supporting cast include Powerstar Srinivasan, Illavarasu, Rekha, Devadharshini, Chithra Latchmanan, Aarthi and Thallabadhi Dinesh.
Ramarajan (Shiva) and Rajkiran (Santhaanam) become close friends after an initial confrontation.
Ramarajan calls himself Dhoni and Rajkiran insists on being called Sehwag, for which no logical reason is given.
Ramarajan meets Seetha (Dhansika) and they fall in love. However, opposition to their relationship comes from the local councillor (Devadharshini), who erroneously believes that Ramarajan is in love with her.
Shiva, who delighted audiences in Vanakkam Chennai, delivers a wooden performance.
Dhansika and Sandhya make great efforts, but they are hamstrung by an awful script and caricature-like characterisation.
It is sad to see a talented actress like Devadharshini reduced to the kind of role she plays in this film. Illavarasu, despite the script, delivers a solid and impressive performance.
Ya Ya will give Kanna Laddu
Thinna Aasaiya stiff competition as the worst film of 2013.
There is no logical development in the story or the characters. Rajasegaran believes that acting foolishly constitutes comedy and that a few gags in a tedious story can pass for entertainment
The film’s saving grace is composer Vijay Ebenezer’s memorable and creative songs. He probably cried when he saw their placement in the movie.
One hopes Rajasegaran’s first attempt at directing is his last.
Films such as Aarambam, Vanakkam Chennai, Neram and Aindhu Aindhu Aindhu showed how Tamil cinema had progressed, but directors like Rajasegaran are determined to undo the process.
