DSTV TOP SERIES Latham Entertainment Presents

- Matthew Vice

Sony Entertainment Television, Channel 127, Friday, 20:00 Okay, we’ve had a few comedy shows listed here already over the past few weeks, so we won’t spend too long on this one. But a comedy show is a great remedy for being home alone on a Friday night. Hmm. I do seem to say that a lot, don’t I? I wonder why?

Anyway, this is another one of those ensemble acts, organised by comedy producer Walter Latham and featuring DL Hughley, Sommore, Bruce Bruce, J Anthony Brown, Earthquake and Rickey Smiley. If those names spell comedy to you, then give it a watch.

Food, Glorious Food I noticed I haven’t shown the BBC Lifestyle channel a lot of love yet, so here it goes. And what better way than with a double feature you can really sink your teeth into? By that I mean they’re both about food… You see what I did there?

Hairy Bikers Everyday Gourmets BBC Lifestyle, Channel 174, Tuesday, 10:30 This show has been running for about two weeks already, but I’ve only just found out about it. It claims that it will show us recipes that anyone can cook at home to feel like a bona fide gourmet chef.

And who better to demonstrate the simplicity of these faux-five-star meals than a pair of hairy bikers?

In a way, that does make the implied simplicity of the gourmet recipes a little bit dubious, since the Hairy Bikers in question are both fairly accomplished celebrity chefs, but hey, for a shot at impressing your dinner guests, it’s worth giving it the benefit of the doubt, right?

David Myers and Simon King have made quite a name for themselves as motorcycle-riding, travelling chefs and cuisine connoisseurs.

The home-style haute cooking in this show promises to be not only easy to make but also easy on the wallet.

Raymond Blanc’s Kitchen Secrets BBC Lifestyle, Channel 174, Tuesday, 21:30 Blimey, his name even sounds hoity, doesn’t it? Chef Raymond Blanc… with a name like that, you’d expect nothing but a spread fit for the Queen, wouldn’t you? And as it turns out, the restaurant he owns has won two Michelin stars, so speculative jesting becomes ironic fact.

He’s had quite an interesting career, if you care to look it up, during which he was chased across the Channel after offending a French chef for whom he worked.

Still, he was able to make a successful go of it, and now season two of his cooking show starts tonight, in which he shows us some of his favourite recipes from 35 years in the business.

It’s possible that these could be a bit more complicated than the Hairy Bikers’ meals, so only confident amateurs need apply.

About a Boy

M-Net, Channel 101, Wednesday, 19:30 Here’s another chance to watch a show before the critics and general consensus ruin it for you. It’s relatively new, even for the Yanks, and what few opinions have appeared online so far seem quite positive. That could all change once we critics unfurl our black wings and take flight to ruin its fun, though.

This new comedy series is based on the book by Nick Hornby, which also inspired a movie in 2002. The only real difference is that the manchild protagonist, Will (David Walton), is living carefree off the royalties of one of his own songs — rather than a song his father wrote, as in the other versions.

But that all changes when single mother Fiona (Minnie Driver) and her young son Marcus (Benjamin Stockham) move in next door.
