Dithering over your choice of MP3 player

- Deon Govender

TIMES have changed from the days when having a Walkman or huge Discman was cool. I remember those days — and how much the batteries cost.

But then everything changed in 2001 with the evolution of MP3 players and the arrival of the iPod.

Today, the variety of iPods on the market is cool and trendy, starting at R749 for a Shuffle — the smallest iPod, which has no display. It can store 2GB of music and is great for gym or someone who wants a basic playlist to listen to every day.

But then the prices start jumping — to R1 799 for the iPod Nano.

So are there any affordable MP3 players that will not dent your pocket?

Yes — and a whole range of them. San Disk has released the Clip MP3 player that sells for less than R700, depending where you buy it.

Considering that the Clip has an FM radio and an external slot for a memory card, it is a cool and affordable choice. The gadget also has an LCD display and you can arrange your playlist.

The only snag is that the headphones it comes with are basic, so I suggest you buy better-quality headphones if you decide to purchase a Clip.

By the way, the battery life of this MP3 player is also great.

There is no such thing as a better MP3 player — you just need to find the one that suits you. You need to ask yourself: “Do I settle for the digital stuff with 4GB of memory and FM radio, or go for the desirable iPod Shuffle that has no LCD, 2GB of memory and costs R50 more?”

I have both and do not know how to answer that question. But I can tell you this: whatever your option, you have chosen one of the two leading MP3 players available right now.
