IF YOU GO . . .

-

WHERE IT IS: 22.1km from Nieuwoudtville on the Loeriesfontein road (R357), turn right at the Brandkop sign and travel for 3km until you reach the cottage.

WHAT IT HAS: Brandkop cottage is rustic but comfortably furnished. Tthere is no electricity (solar lighting and gas appliances are supplied) but all the equipment you need for self-catering is provided. There are two ensuite bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two singles. There is an inside and outside braai and firewood is available for purchase. Linen and towels are also provided.

WHY GO THERE: The spring flowers — Nieuwoudtville is known as the bulb capital of the world — are normally plentiful, but there is much else to see and do nearby: amble through the amazing quiver tree forest on mountain slopes just kilometres from the cottage; have a picnic at the Nieuwoudtville waterfall site and take in its 70m drop as well as many bird and plant species and visit one of the biggest private collections of vintage and other motorbikes in Southern Africa at Protea Motors in Nieuwoudtville. But once you get to the cottage, you may just want to sit quietly and drink in its splendid isolation.

THE FOOD: During the flower season, braai packs may be ordered in advance. Outside this period you need to bring all your own food and drink. RATES: Adults R350 per person per night. Children under 12 pay half price.
