The Pavilion lays on a smorgasbord of tantalising tastes

Popular mall launches brand-new food court

SINFULLY scrumptious garlic bread was the star of The Pavilion shopping centre’s taste experience this week.

On Wednesday, the mall in Westville, Durban, opened its doors to the media, promising a “taste adventure” courtesy of its newly revamped food court.

The spread put on by the centre management could have fed an army, but it was infinitely tastier than army slop — from the warm, cheesy garlic bread served as one of the starters to the yummy pastries that formed part of dessert.

A portion of the food court was cordoned off, complete with a stylish makeshift dining area done in hues of orange and green and artfully set up to accommodate the guests.

Pavilion general manager Nisha Kemraj made for a welcoming and attentive hostess. But it was a pity that she did not have a microphone, because her speech was lost in the background noise of the busy centre.

The food — which included everything from chicken tikka to frozen yoghurt — comprised a selection of the takeaways from the centre’s food hub.

Despite early warnings from the servers to pace themselves, the guests were full long before the hourlong event came to a close.

There were burgers, pizza and corn accompaniments, and curries were brought out later.

As we were recovering from the smorgasbord of tastes, marketing manager Andile Rapiya emerged from one of the kitchens carrying a platter of grilled chicken pieces, which she offered to guests.

When no one took her up on her offer, Rapiya quipped: “That is okay. I see by your faces that you are full. I will just parade around with this then.”

After they had eaten their fill, the guests were encouraged to take doggy bags of their favourite POPULAR local musicians and inspiring youth mentors attended a delicious breakfast at Durban’s Elangeni Hotel on Wednesday morning.

The organisers and the media gathered for the launch of the 15th annual African Renaissance conference, which will be held in Durban this week.

Over a muesli yoghurt mousse starter, organisers including Andrzej Kiepiela, youth co-convenor Lysle Krause and Phumzile Langa — who was mortified when Kiepiela waxed lyrical about her famous father, the former Chief Justice Pius Langa — shared details of the upcoming programme.

The conference, to be held at the Durban International Convention Centre on Thursday and Friday and themed “Africa in Motion”, will focus on tourism, transport, logistics, ports and aviation, and the media.

A youth conference will precede the two-day event and will be followed by an Africa Day concert at the ICC arena on Sunday featuring Micasa and Uhuru, among others. — Yasantha Naidoo dishes. Me thinks The Pavilion owes me a gym contract.
