Thembalethu Zulu joined the crowds at Nirox for art, food and wine at the Winter Sculpture Fair

If the idea behind the Winter Sculpture Fair was to relocate Franschhoek to Johannesburg for a weekend, then the sea of moustachioed hipsters and European expats who flocked to Maropeng last weekend suggested that everything went according to plan. This annual fair took place over two days at the Nirox Sculpture Park in the Cradle of Humankind, and was sold out well in advance, with visitors vying to get their hands on tickets to take in top local, contemporary sculpture and plus food and wine from the Cape’s Frenchified village. Picnickers lolled alongside dams, under trees and among pieces including a magnificent five-ton work by Angus Taylor entitled Morphic Resonance. Surely the Sculpture Fair is proof that Joburgers are crying out for more classily curated cultural events and a shot of country air? We think so!
