SABC news anchor Vabakshnee swept off her feet -
BREAKING news: SABC news anchor Vabakshnee Chetty is off the market.
The popular presenter got tongues wagging when she returned from leave two weeks ago sporting a huge diamond engagement ring.
Chetty said she got engaged on April 19 while holidaying in the Seychelles with her US boyfriend — now fiancé — Geoff Miller.
Miller has been living in South Africa for three years and works for a credit information company.
“I wanted to make the proposal special so I chartered a speedboat,” said Miller. “We went snorkelling, saw some amazing fish and got within inches of a sea turtle.”
Then they “parked off” on a deserted island and had a picnic.
“I opened some champagne and popped the question as we were sitting on the sand. I didn’t get down on one knee,” said Miller.
“The only downside was the lizards, who took an interest in the ring and our food. We had to fend them off.”
He said he knew Chetty would like an antique ring and he had worked with a jeweller on the design.
“Geoff did an amazing job with the ring. I absolutely love it,” said Chetty.
She declined to say how big the main cushion-cut diamond was.
Chetty, who is from Durban, said she and Miller, who grew up in Chicago, were introduced by a mutual friend and their first meeting was at a ballet performance of Romeo and Juliet. They have been dating for two years.
“The proposal was an unforgettable moment — perfectly planned and extremely romantic,” she said.
“We are planning to get married in Cape Town in November.
“It will be an intimate traditional Catholic Church service followed by a reception at a vineyard. We are also planning a prewedding celebration in Durban and a wedding afterparty in Chicago.”
Miller said Chetty had caught his eye because she is smart, witty, has an “unbelievable heart” and is beautiful.
Chetty said she was attracted to Miller because he is intelligent and ambitious and a natural leader with a playful and generous side.
His dimples were an added bonus, she said.
Miller said he was leaving the decision about where to go for their honeymoon up to Chetty.
But she said she was struggling to find a destination that could top the Seychelles.
