Say yes to the best

Nicki Grihault names five Mauritius hotels that all offer a dream honeymoon

-

1. MARADIVA VILLAS

Set on a quiet stretch of white-sand beach, the 65 elegant villas are discreetly hidden from view. Guests spend most of their time on the verandah or in the plunge pool (some private enough for skinny-dipping). The more affordable garden villas have the loveliest views of Tamarin Mountain. The hotel has three restaurants, which include the romantic Cilantro, where Indian tapas are served alfresco. Don’t miss an earlymorning swim with the dolphin pod in Tamarin Bay.

2. ANGSANA BALACLAVA

Nestled in a private spot in Turtle Bay, the 51 plush but restful rooms feature rattan screens and local art, and there’s also a villa that comes complete with a personal butler. Guests have a choice of candlelit restaurants, and couples can also dine on the beach. Also on offer are a spa, yoga and tai chi classes, a pretty seawater pool (with a sandy bottom) and tandem skydiving.

3. LAKAZ CHAMAREL EXCLUSIVE LODGE

Set in flower-filled gardens, the hotel has a convivial, bohemian vibe. The 20 eco-lodges and suites are individually decorated and have either garden or sea views. Chamarel village is a 10-minute walk away, and the hotel operates a shuttle to nearby Le Morne beach twice daily.

4. 20 DEGRES SUD

The hotel is peacefully located in a coconut grove on the waterfront, with sea breezes and a small but sheltered beach. It’s elegant with an upmarket beachclub feel. For those looking for adventure away from the hotel, the restaurants, bars and clubs of Grand Baie are nearby.

5. VERANDA PAUL & VIRGINIE

This intimate three-star hotel may have a small beach and pools, but it does offer great value for money and is within easy access of plentiful beaches and the nightlife of Grand Baie. The atmosphere is romantic and includes double sunbeds and love seats. There’s also candlelit dining in the thatched Saint Geran restaurant.
