And the futsal winners are . . .

KWAZULU-NATAL’S futsal team racked up a point for the province by bringing home the interprovincial tournament trophy last month.

The three-day event began in Cape Town on May 21.

The KwaZulu-Natal team defeated Gauteng 6-3 on the final day.

Futsal is a five-a-side version of soccer that is generally played indoors on a smaller pitch.

Team manager Chris Naidoo said although the squad won every match leading up to the final, they knew the Gauteng team would pose a threat.

“Our lads were prepared for the task on hand. They went to business from the very first whistle and within 12 minutes the KwaZuluNatal team were 3-0 up. Every single player gave 110% and this complete team performance saw them win this encounter.”

Naidoo said that the individual acclaim some of the players achieved made the tournament win sweeter, adding that he hoped this would bring the players to the attention of the national selectors.

Renaldo Donnelly was the highest goal scorer of the tournament and team captain Radlin Sanssoucie received the player of the tournament award.

“This is an amazing achievement for the province and I am confident that a few of our players will be in the national squad for the upcoming Confederation of African Football tournament. Hopefully, more youths get involved in futsal, which is, undoubtedly, the best development tool for upcoming soccer players,” said Naidoo.
