THE University of the Witwatersr­and has made some senior appointmen­ts. Professor Martin Veller has been appointed dean of the faculty of health sciences and Carol Crosley has been appointed registrar.

Veller, a vascular surgeon, was head of the department of surgery in the school of clinical medicine at Wits from November 2001 to February 2013. He will assume the deanship on July 1.

Veller received his preand postgradua­te training at Wits, where he qualified in general surgery in 1987. He subsequent­ly undertook a one-year research fellowship at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College, London.

He was appointed ad hominem professor in the faculty of health sciences at Wits in 2002 and is currently the president of the College of Surgeons in the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa as well as the president of the World Federation of Vascular Societies.

Crosley began at Wits in 1998. She is the former deputy registrar of enrolment at the university. Before that, from 2001, she was the deputy registrar and head of the Student Enrolment Centre.

Her prior positions at Wits include faculty assistant registrar in the faculty of commerce, law and management. She also managed the public relations portfolio in the vice-chancellor’s office.

She completed her master’s degree in education last year. FRANCINA Makhoane has been appointed head of the Food Safety Initiative business unit of the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa.

Before moving to the council, she worked for the Gauteng department of health as a deputy-director in the public health directorat­e.

Makhoane was with the national Department of Health for eight years.

In 2005, she was promoted to the position of national Codex contact point manager, serving as the point of contact between South Africa and the codex Alimentari­us Commission Secretaria­t. WILLEM van Biljon has joined online retailer takealot.com as co-CEO and chief technology officer.

He co-founded Mosaic Software, the creators of the Postilion payment system, and was one of the leaders who built Amazon’s EC2 cloud service and Nimbula.
