POP star Danny K and wife Lisa may have to turn their affection for their beloved bulldog, Banksy, to a newcomer in the family.

On Friday last week at 3.28am, the couple’s first child, Jayden Max Koppel, made his way into the world to the sound of Bill Withers’s Lovely Day.

The singer, whose full name is Danny Koppel, said Lisa had been in labour for nearly 24 hours and when it became apparent the baby would be born on July 4, he googled singers with the same birth date.

“I saw that Bill Withers was born on July 4 and Lovely Day is one of my favourite songs,” he said.

“It’s been the most incredible experience of our lives. We didn’t really know what we were going to feel, but it’s been such a joy. Even when he wakes up for feeds at two or three in the morning, it’s just a joy.”

But it remains to be seen how Banksy will respond to the new addition to the family. The French bulldog is almost as famous as his owner — he has featured on the cover of Danny K’s album Good Look and in the music video for Brown Eyes. He appears regularly on Instagram dressed in elaborate outfits and has his own Twitter account.

Danny K said Lisa, the daughter of divorce lawyer Billy Gundelfinger, had awoken at about 5am on July 3 and “felt something”.

“I was a nonbeliever that she was in labour, but we went to the hospital anyway to check it out.”

At the Johannesburg hospital, Lisa was told she was in labour, but that she had enough time to go home and come back again in about six hours.

“I was quite calm, but my only panic was driving back to the Park Lane Clinic on the N1 in 4pm traffic. I did a bit of emergency lane driving,” said Danny K.

But Jayden took his time coming into the world, waiting until after 3am.

“We didn’t get much sleep the day before or the day after, so it was a really gruelling 72 hours. But Lisa coped amazingly well. She stayed strong and calm.”

Born with a head of “thick dark hair and a nice olive skin tone”, Baby K seems set to take after his dad.

“My mom sent me a photo of myself as a newborn and the similarities are uncanny. But he changes every day. He gets more pretty by the day,” said the proud father.

Jayden received his name on Friday in a Jewish circumcision and naming ceremony called a bris.

Danny K said he had taken some time off to spend with his family and offer “moral support” to his wife.

“I want to be involved as a father, even changing nappies.”

And he looks forward to getting to know his son.

“I just want to see how he turns out and see what his little personality is going to be.”
