Versatile Vidya eyes a sparkling career
BOBBY JASOOS (7/10)
VIDYA Balan has to rank as one of the most powerful leading ladies in Bollywood cinema.
She may not have the sex appeal of a Deepika Padukone or Priyanka Chopra, and she has yet to bag a role among the powerful Khan brigade. However, the actress is totally unfazed by her competitors or her co-stars to date.
Balan has dominated the industry with mesmerising performances in compelling movies such as No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture , Paa and her muchacclaimed performance in Kahaani . Her only recent glitch came in the outrageous comedy Ghanchakkar, which the actress should label a mistake.
In Bobby Jasoos she teams up with the beautiful couple of Dia Mirza and Sahil Sangha, the producers of this detective flick, playing the title character.
Bobby is carefree, bubbly and ambitious; it is the latter that leads to a strained relationship with her family and her romantic interest.
Bobby is mysteriously tasked by a wealthy businessman with finding a girl with a birthmark on her palm. She succeeds, and this leads to more work from the mystery man. However, when Bobby decides to do her own investigations, she is surprised by the results.
Bobby Jasoos is an interesting concept that works well because of a simple script headed by a powerful leading lady.
The story unfolds quickly as the pieces of the puzzle come together and the movie has a fantastic background score.
Balan saves the film from being average — she delivers a sparkling performance and does brilliantly in the different disguises as the heart and soul of the movie.
Every filmmaker should be proud to have this versatile performer as an asset to his projects.
She also springs a pleasant surprise casting alongside relative newcomer Ali Fazal, who makes a positive impression.
The biggest gripe I have about the movie is the romantic track towards the second half that proves an unnecessary speed bump just as the story gains interesting momentum.
Overall, Bobby Jasoos is one of the coolest detective movies in Bollywood. Even I would trust Balan with my cases.
