Box-Office Buzz Pausing before the next film onslaught
AS predicted, Salman Khan’s Kick is fast becoming this year’s biggest earner.
Because so many fans are flocking to see it, producers have wisely decided to wait for two weeks before releasing any new films.
But there are plenty of good movies, from a number of genres, to look forward to this month.
This weekend we await the arrival of the comedy
Entertainment.
The film stars Akshay Kumar and Tamannaah Bhatia, but they both play second fiddle to a dog — a hound named Entertainment who inherits a huge fortune.
Kumar, who is still basking in the success of his thriller Holiday, said: “It is a genre nobody has tried for a long time. A film with a human being and a dog has not come in the last 15 to 18 years.
“In Hollywood, there are films such as Planet of the
Apes and Godzilla.” Kumar said that acting alongside a dog in a comedy was a new genre for him, “and I don’t know if I will succeed”.
“My chemistry with the dog is better than with anyone else. It was so much fun.
“From the bottom of my heart I feel every gentle kid should have a dog. There is no companionship quite like it,” said Kumar.
The film is directed by Sajid-Farhad and the supporting cast includes Sonu Sood, Mithun Chakraborty and Prakash Raj.
One of the most exciting releases of the month is the high-octane action thriller
Singham Returns, which is due to open on August 15. It follows on from 2011’s
Singham, and marks the return of Ajay Devgn as the tough, fearless cop Bajirao Singham.
The sequel was made by Rohit Shetty, who was responsible for the blockbuster action comedy
Chennai Express.
Kareena Kapoor Khan is the leading lady in this tale of dirty politics and religious manipulation.
The last of the big releases is the thriller Mardaani , in which actress Rani Mukerjee is likely to give male action stars a run for their money.
In a happy coincidence, the highly anticipated film will hit South Africa’s big screens in Women’s Month.
The thriller is produced by Rani’s husband, Aditya Chopra, and directed by Pradeep Sarkar of Parineeta fame.
Mukerjee plays a dedicated inspector out to thwart a human trafficking syndicate.
The actress said: “I am so glad this opportunity landed in my lap.
“I spent a lot of time working with female inspectors and I found all my research to be very inspirational.
“It’s a character I have loved playing and I hope it inspires women across the world.” Despite the flop that was
Ghanchakkar, fans of Emraan Hashmi are keen to see the crime comedy Raja
Natwarlal , in which Bollywood’s favourite serial kisser plays the role of a con man.
With a plethora of releases, plan your weekends in advance and be prepared to be delighted by the best of Bollywood.
