Doctor stabbed to death in Greenside home

- JAN BORNMAN Crime · Incidents · Austria · Greenside

A DOCTOR was murdered in her Greenside, Johannesburg, home two months after her domestic worker was attacked on the premises.

Dr Jennifer Butters, 54, was stabbed to death on Thursday between 10am and 11am in her house in Donegal Avenue.

Her brother, Andrew Butters, 52, said he was convinced the killing was not the result of a random burglary.

He believed it was linked to the previous attack on his sister’s domestic worker, Minah Mahlangu, 59, who had been in the doctor’s employ since 1991.

Mahlangu was devastated upon returning to work on Friday.

Butters was a radiologist at Netcare’s Linksfield hospital. She was single and had no children.

Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha of the Parkview police said the murder scene revealed signs of a struggle. “There is blood all over the house.”

He said the only item stolen was a cellphone.

Andrew said his sister had been a very private person and had planned to open her own mammography practice.

“The house was on the market and she had already leased the equipment and was planning to move to a small townhouse,” he said.

Mahlangu said her employer was “like a mother” and “very kind”.

“Sometimes we’d shout at each other, then it’s finished and we’d just laugh about it,” she said.

Residents have scheduled a meeting for today to discuss security concerns in the area.
