Agassi’s finger-licking tantrum

-

ANDRE Agassi was so enraged when Brooke Shields, his then girlfriend, licked Matt LeBlanc’s fingers in an episode of Friends that he drove home and smashed his Wimbledon trophy and other tennis awards.

The actress claims in a book on her life that Agassi watched from the wings in 1995 as she recorded the scene. After licking the fingers of LeBlanc, who played a shocked Joey, she threw her head back and laughed maniacally. Agassi stormed off the Los Angeles set, telling her she had “made him look a fool”.

He got in his car and drove all the way to Las Vegas.

She said that on arriving home he smashed every trophy he had won, “including Wimbledon and the US Open, never mind all the others”.

Shields disclosed the jealous tantrum in her book There Was a Little Girl: The Real Story of My Mother and Me, to be released next week. It charts her relationship with her mother, Teri, who died suffering from dementia in October 2012.

“My book stemmed from my mother’s death, and my relationship with my own daughters,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.

“The funny thing is, now I’ll hear myself saying something my mother would have said, both good and bad.

“A mother informs you. It’s a primal relationship.”

Despite Shields’s stormy time with Agassi, the couple married two years after the incident on the Friends set, when she was 32. But she realised she had made a mistake two days after the wedding.

“I could not form a sentence. I kept shaking my head. It hit me all of a sudden — I knew I had made a mistake. I did not want to be married. I wanted to be a bride but I shouldn’t have been married yet,” she writes.

In Agassi’s autobiography Open, published in 2009, he agrees that the lavish Californian wedding was a mistake.
