Pre-teen feminist rocks the music world

-

MEET the latest empowered woman to take the music world by storm. She’s British. She’s called Sophia Grace. Oh, and she’s 11.

Sophia, from Essex, has just released a single called Best Friends. And it’s already been widely touted as the “rap song of the year”.

There’s pink, there’s glitter and there’s lip gloss as Sophia hangs with her girlfriends.

But its message about the power of female friendship is pretty great (if you can overlook the typical “girlie activities” such as shopping and fashion shows). Take this: “Stupid boys come around/ Me and my girls shut ’em down/ Nobody can stop us now/ Women take over, we run this town”. And this: “I take you to the top/ I’m never gonna stop/ 11 years old that’s just how I rock”.

Sophia Grace is the new face of pre-teen feminism.

She is no stranger to the screen, having made numerous appearances on Ellen DeGeneres’s show. Her cover of Nicki Minaj’s single Super Bass — posted online by her aunt — went viral on YouTube in 2011. When she was eight.

Sophia has almost 300 000 followers on Instagram and more than 330 000 likes on Facebook.
