Wake up and take action on genetically modified food

-

OVER the past few years, many people worldwide, including in South Africa, have raised their concerns with politicians, political parties and the media regarding genetically modified foods.

There is a lack of will on the government’s part to ensure that these products are clearly labelled so that consumers who are informed about the criminal practice of patenting food sources and the health dangers due to poisonous pesticides can boycott the products.

The media has also paid little to no attention to this issue and when it has done so on the odd occasion, the proponents of genetically modified organisms are portrayed in a biased and favourable light.

Recently, 59 743 982 people known throughout the world sent an open letter to the citizens, politicians and regulators of the UK and the rest of the European Union about the hazards of genetically modified crops.

I hope that South Africa will finally wake up and start taking action. — Gail Evans, by e-mail
