Maths must stay in class

-

“TOP marks for no homework and more play” (November 22) about Gavin Keller came as a breath of fresh air and hope to our family and, I am certain, to countless others.

If only other schools would dare to “buck the system” and take his stand.

As a grandmother, I have witnessed the tiredness, stress and hours spent by my daughter and her seven-year-old daughter as they wrestle with homework. Reading for 20 minutes would be such a pleasure and something to look forward to. Even counting and reciting can be fun, and can be done in the car. But workbooks and maths concepts belong in the classroom and not in the home. A child should not be deprived of time to play and relax. — Valerie Ball, by e-mail
