BIOMETRICS BEGIN
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has begun capturing passengers’ biometric data at South Africa’s international airports and plans to have biometric machines at every port of entry by August.
Travel Buyer reports that spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete said the DHA would implement biometric machines at four ports of entry every month, prioritising those that handled the highest volume of passengers.
During the busy December period, biometrics are only being taken from international transit passengers at OR Tambo.
Tshwete said that, by early next year, all international passengers would be submitting biometric data at the Johannesburg airport.
