Expresso Morning Show presenter flies high, sails far and keeps her bags packed HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAVEL?
Since joining the Expresso Show, I’ve been travelling on a regular basis. Most of the time it is just in and out of a city, but the best are the shoots that allow for free time and exploring. YOUR EARLIEST TRAVELLING EXPERIENCES? My first time out of SA was at the age of 16. We went extreme and travelled to Mozambique on a yacht. My first overseas trip was after high school, I was 19 and working in the US as an au pair. I ended up staying 18 months and saw all the major cities. WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR A PERFECT HOLIDAY? First on my list is a travel companion —
someone with whom memories can be made and shared. Whether it’s friends, family or a partner, someone should experience it with me. Also, I need balance in my planning. I want to do enough to experience my destination but without feeling exhausted. FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION AND WHY? Amanzimtoti, Durban. Mainly because my parents and siblings live there and I have wonderful friends and memories of the place. BEST HOLIDAY EVER? My last holiday is always the best one. Although it was mainly for competing purposes, I had enough free time to make it count as a holiday. During the Presenter Search competition, we were in Zanzibar for almost two weeks and I made some amazing new friends. I explored Stone Town, went seaweed harvesting with the locals, had latenight swims and went canoeing in the warm sea. The best part was going third-lung diving. It’s the perfect combination between snorkelling and scuba-diving. MOST RELAXING DESTINATION? Ceres in the Western Cape. My parents were both born there and we still have family there. It’s the one place I always leave feeling good about life and ready for a new challenge. FAVOURITE CITY? San Francisco. I loved the free spirit and the relaxed atmosphere. There’s plenty to see and do. I walked across the Golden Gate Bridge and gave it a kiss. My favourite local city is Cape Town. MOST ADVENTUROUS TRAVEL EXPERIENCE? Sailing on a yacht from Richards Bay up the Mozambique Channel to an atoll called Bassas da India. It is completely uninhabited and only peeks out during low tide. After that, we island-hopped down the coast of Mozambique back to Richards Bay, stopping along the way at Bazaruto Island, Vilanculos and Inhambane. The trip lasted three and a half weeks. FAVOURITE HOTEL? I loved staying at Quarters Hotel in Hermanus and have fond memories of The Cascades at Sun City. Abroad, my favourite is the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower in Las Vegas. It’s along the Vegas Strip and is surrounded by all the buzz, but the minute you step into your room, you feel a million miles away from the craziness. E-mail certified copies of important documents, such as your passport, visas etc, to yourself. If there’s an emergency, you can access it all. Pack a box of Panado — and always say yes. WHAT’S YOUR ONE TRAVEL ESSENTIAL? My smartphone. With one device I can do it all, from staying in touch to navigating to capturing great memories. It eliminates so many unnecessary gadgets and items. WHERE TO NEXT? I don’t know yet. But my passport is ready for its next stamp and my bags are itching to fly.
