Goliaths eye the big time at Roast Cafe
IT’S no joke that the Goliaths are big. And the funny family are set for even bigger things with the launch of their comedy club in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.
The new venture is “a dream come true” for Jason, Kate, Nicholas and Donovan Goliath.
“I wish I could put into words what kind of happens in my stomach when I think about it all,” said Jason, 35.
“We have worked so hard to get here and are forcing ourselves to believe that the club is the beginning of Chapter 1.”
The clan are best known for stand-up comedy performances at shows such as AWEdnesday Comedy Jam, Melville Underground and Blacks Only, and have featured on DStv’s Comedy Central shows.
Jason is also known for acting in SABC1 sitcom Ses’Top La and has appeared in commercials for Castle Lager, Cell C and 1st for Women. He and Donovan have competed in the SABC3 reality show Strictly Come Dancing.
Called The Goliath Comedy Club, the new business is a joint venture between the family, businessman Tony Raciti and Fotis Drakopoulos — who operates Roast Cafe, the restaurant that will host the comedy club.
Jason’s sister, Kate, said the restaurant had opened in November — while the club was being built — because the rental agreement stipulated that it be operational by that time.
The Goliath Comedy Experience, a three-day comedy festival in partnership with Comedy Central, will herald the opening of the club. The festival will feature comedians such as Ndumiso Lindi, Chris Forrest, Kedibone Mulaudzi and Chris Mapane.
“The festival, which starts on April 29, is a preview of what we will be doing at the club. We will host comedy events and also let out the venue for comedy-oriented functions,” said Kate.
