SOFTWARE company SAP Africa has appointed Lawrence Kandaswami MD of its South African business. Kandaswami has almost 20 years’ management experience and has held senior positions at De Beers and Business Objects, among other bluechip companies.

Kandaswami joined SAP South Africa in 2008 and was most recently the head of SAP South Africa’s public-sector organisati­on.

He has held various leadership roles in the company and areas such as consulting, presales, strategic customer sales, platform solutions group sales and business analytics. EMIRATES Airlines has appointed Orhan Abbas as its senior vice-president for commercial operations Africa.

His job will be to lead growth efforts across the continent, reporting directly to Thierry Antinori, executive vice-president and chief commercial officer.

Since joining Emirates in 1998 as a management trainee, Abbas has held senior positions in Tanzania, Iran, South Africa and the Middle East as well as the position of vice-president for India and Nepal.

In August 2013, he was appointed senior vice-president for commercial operations in Latin America as well as Central and Southern Africa. ERIK Roos is to become the new CEO of pharmaceut­ical company Pharma Dynamics.

He replaces Paul Anley, who has resigned after founding the company in 2001 and building it into South Africa’s biggest distributo­r of cardiovasc­ular medicine.

Pharma Dynamics is also the third-largest supplier of generic medicines in the country.

Roos has experience in the industry as the former CEO of generic-pharmaceut­ical company Mylan South Africa,

He said: “We have strong brands and technologi­es, leading positions in many healthcare classes in South Africa and with Lupin around the world.” THE University of Johannesbu­rg has appointed Dr Carol Nonkwelo its new executive director for research and innovation.

This former director of research and innovation support at the University of Pretoria has an MBA from the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business, a master’s degree in medical microbiolo­gy and a PhD in microbiolo­gy and immunology.

Nonkwelo has led teams providing support for postgradua­te education, research administra­tion and management and technology transfer.

She has worked at the Medical Research Council and the National Research Foundation.
