WHERE IT IS: The four-star Protea Hotel by Marriott® Clarens is conveniently situated on the edge of town — a five-minute stroll up the road brings you to the centre of the village and its shopping, eating and drinking. Clarens is in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains and close to the famous Golden Gate National Park.

WHAT IT HAS: It’s a stylish spot with an upmarket boutique hotel feel. The hotel’s décor with its sandstone interiors is in keeping with the architecture and style of the region. It has 70 rooms, some of which have open-plan bathrooms, and all rooms offer lovely mountain views.
