WHERE IT IS: The four-star Protea Hotel by Marriott® Clarens is conveniently situated on the edge of town — a five-minute stroll up the road brings you to the centre of the village and its shopping, eating and drinking. The executive suites are vast and have their own private balconies where you can while away the time and gaze at the scenery.

WHAT ABOUT THE FOOD: The hotel has its own restaurant, Adamo, which is billed as international cuisine. Being in Clarens means there are also more than a dozen restaurants and cafés within a short walk. All are listed on the hotel website. The Protea hotels are also famous for their lavish buffet breakfasts. RATES: From R1 548 per room per night, but check for special offers.
