Calm, collected home style

’THIS is the place where I recharge and reboot,” says Pernille Teisbaek, fashion director of The You Way and street-style star, sitting in her apartment in the Frederiksberg district of Copenhagen.

“Everyone who visits us says it’s so calm. Whenever I’ve been away and stayed in a bunch of hotel rooms, it’s always amazing to come back here for the space, light and energy. I feel very free here.”

The apartment shows how Pernille’s taste goes beyond her wardrobe, with a style that’s natural, instinctive and playful, mixing vintage pieces with new finds to create a signature that is her own. It’s a space that’s often been glimpsed by her 347K followers on Instagram when she posts pictures of her look, with her interiors perfectly complementing her outfit.

“My apartment is aligned with my general style,” she says. “I like modern pieces put together with classics, in toneddown colours like blues, greys, brass and gold, with a few pieces that pop out. It totally reflects my wardrobe.”

Pernille bought the apartment a year ago, after falling in love with the space. Before she moved in, though, she made some major decisions about how to change it.

“In Copenhagen, the apartments are traditionally big but with very small rooms. You need to tear down walls to create more light,” she says. The result was big spaces that enhance her lifestyle.

“I saw it as a fresh start,” she says. “I brought a few things with me, but pieces I thought were perfect looked so small in this space. I sold a lot of my furniture and started to look for pieces that fit in better.”

Pernille enjoys shopping for interiors as much as she enjoys shopping for fashion. “I love going to stores around the world and finding new inspiration. I found my sofa in New York and had it custom-made there. I love things that are personal to me. My dining table was made by an Italian marble expert who doesn’t usually take private commissions.”

She is also proud of her country’s design heritage. “I love Danish furniture, and I blend it in with the things I find on my travels,” she says. “I have chairs by Arne Jacobsen around my dining table and in my office, and I also love Wegner. I love the mix of materials and textures, and designs that I will never get tired of looking at.”

A lived-in look is important to Pernille. “The thing about a home is that it needs to be worn in,” she says. “I don’t like coming into a flat and it feels like an exhibition. I like vintage because it has a worn look that I really enjoy.” When it comes to new design, it has to be something specific and special. “For my birthday, my boyfriend surprised me with a beautiful brass plate by FOS.”

The stylist has a clear philosophy about decorating her home. “Invest in some classics because you can’t go wrong with them and then mix it up with a few pieces that bring something fresh to your interiors.” Along with bespoke items and vintage finds, she adds new pieces.

“Think about your home the same way you think about what you wear. I love to create a look using pieces that have a sense of fashion and style. That’s what I love about H&M Home — it has the same love of fashion and fun as H&M itself. It’s great when you find a piece that makes you see things in a new way, like the H&M Home cashmere blanket or linen bedsheets. I use these pieces to update my style and create a cosy atmosphere. I love that you can do it without spending too much money.”

Her favourite room in the apartment? “I love my living room, but I love my bedroom the most,” she says. “It has a small balcony, and it’s so nice to wake up in the morning with the sun coming through the windows. I grow plants on the balcony because it’s nice to have some green when you’re this high up. There’s something really special about the room; it’s just such a nice space to be in.”

Pernille’s apartment is an ever-evolving project. “I am always looking for new things,” she says. “I love this apartment so much, it’s where I truly feel myself.”
