ROAD construction costs have risen so steeply that toll charges will eventually have to be imposed on main highways throughout the country.

This is the view of Mr. J. F. Oberholzer, chairman of Johannesburg’s Works and Traffic Committee, who said the day would come when the costs could break the back of any municipality forced to carry the main burden on its shoulders.

Last week Mr. Oberholzer said Johannesburg would have to consider imposing a toll on “outside” motorists, if the Government and the province refused to increase their contributions to the cost of the city’s motorways. — January 15 1967

THERE will be no age limit on failed matriculants returning to school this year, according to Department of Education and Training spokesman Edgar Posselt. However, available space at schools would be given first to pupils who passed Std 9 last year. Matriculants who failed but achieved at least 25% could register for supplementary exams. Returning exiles would have to show proof of the last standard they passed before they would be admitted to schools, he said. There would be no other restrictions on them. ANC president Nelson Mandela has called on all pupils to return to school and appealed for 1992 to become a year of learning and effective teaching. — January 12 1992
