Sin tax on a nation drowning its sorrows

-

A FAILED state and a failed administration stuck between intensive care and the mortuary are now resorting to the desperate measure of filling their bottomless pockets through a sugar tax.

The failing system of ANC leadership is evident in every corner of South Africa. South Africans drink too much because of despair and uncertainty, heading to the nearest shebeen rather than watching their country turn into a second Zimbabwe.

We drown our sorrows in pricey alcohol as a means to escape the reality that “a better life for all” is a myth.

We need at least a sugary drink to heap on that. That’s where the sugar tax comes in — another sin tax to add to alcohol.

Sober or highly intoxicated, this is a country hosting its own funeral preamble. — Grieving Cadre Nkanyiso, Newcastle
