FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES 50 YEARS AGO

Carol Marks, a Johannesburg model, returned from Britain this week — causing a stir in the South African modelling world. She arrived in the latest “swinging London gear” and armed with British modelling techniques which left the country’s fashion experts gasping. Clad in long black culotte pants, black tights, Tom Jones shoes and a vivid orange satin blouse, Carol moved from one gawky and awkward position to another in front of the camera. “You have to move, you see,” she said in a faintly clipped London accent. “If you don’t move, you’re sunk. The days of the model staying in one agonising position for hours are over. Movement is what the fashion people want.” — December 3 1967

FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES 25 YEARS AGO

The crippling costs of the white Model C education system have forced a Cape Town family to send their two sons to a coloured school — which will cost them 4% of the fees at their white schools. Mrs Vicky Diener, of Brackenfell, said she would have paid Rl 790 for Mark, 18, and Sean, 14, to attend a local high school and a technical school. But she discovered that nearby Kasselsvlei Senior Secondary School offered technical, commercial and academic matrics so the boys could attend the same school — for a total of R75 a year. Fees at coloured and black schools are substantially lower because they are still heavily subsidised by the government. — December 6 1992
