Zuma’s protection racket
The South African public needs to be protected from the public protector. She once claimed her recommendation to amend the constitution to broaden the mandate of the South African Reserve Bank was a “typo”. Busisiwe Mkhwebane clearly has little understanding of her functions. The president’s protector this week showed where her loyalty lies, and it is definitely not with the public. She is probably the only one who has not received the memo that there is a new sheriff in town. Her unsolicited suggestion that the scope of the commission of inquiry into state capture be broadened makes a mockery of the office that was once the public’s last hope to hold the powerful accountable. The bad news is that this scopecreeper still has six years to go on her contract.
