SNOW SAILS
The Tschuggen Grand Hotel in the village of Arosa, Switzerland, is perched at 1 800m in the Alps. It offers the usual perks of an ultraluxurious getaway, including fine dining, coddling accommodations and private balconies with glorious views.
It also has its own mountain railway to carry guests directly to the slopes.
But it’s the jaw-dropping architecture of the spa — built into the mountainside next to the hotel — that really sets it apart.
To solve the problem of low light, designer Mario Botta conceived of several enormous glass “sails“that stretch up out of the mountain to let the light in. By day, they shimmer white against their snowy mountain backdrop; by night they are lit like stainedglass windows. ● https://tschuggen.ch/en
