It’s a done deal as Stars confirm new owners

- By SAZI HADEBE and MARC STRYDOM

● After months of speculation, it emerged this week that struggling PSL club Platinum Stars have been sold to a consortium backed by a businessman based in Cape Town.

A source close to the purchase of the North West-based club, who did not want to be named, said that the deal has been done, but the club just needs ratification from the league for the sale to be concluded: “The club has been sold. It’s just a question of when and where it will be announced.

“There are just some issues that the club has got to get approved by the league and some financial matters. It’s been agreed on, although, at the moment, there’s nothing official yet.”

The source did not foresee problems in the deal being ratified by the PSL.

“It’s not like the club are changing name, or moving cities, or changing their colours. Everything stays the same. It’s just the bank account that everyone gets paid from that changes.”

The source, asked if Roger De Sa was involved, could only confirm that the coach “knows the people who’ve bought the club”.

PSL spokesman Lux September confirmed that the league did receive the application for the club’s deal to be approved.

"We are aware of events happening at Platinum Stars, but other than the fact they have lodged the application with the PSL, there’s nothing more we can say about the details of their deal at this stage,” said September.

Dikwena have been in administration, led by chairman Cliff Ramoroa, who has been accused of selling the club to people outside of North West.

It was reported on Friday that those who are opposed to the deal have called on the club supporters to boycott their home matches, starting with yesterday’s clash against Orlando Pirates at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.

While matters off the field have been moving with some speed at Stars, De Sa and his charges are battling relegation and have not moved off the foot of the table in recent weeks.

The club signed Malawian-born attacker Gerald Phiri on loan from Bidvest Wits this week and De Sa was hoping to sign two more players before the close of the January window on Wednesday.

After managing to get 15 points in the first round, De Sa believes gaining the same tally in the second round should be enough to save the club from relegation.
