Wanted: fresh cartoon talent
Are you a skilled draughtsman with a keen interest in South African politics? Do you have strong opinions about the direction the country is taking? Do you have a distinctive style and an incisive voice? Can you capture the major political events of the day in a clear and compelling visual idea? Are you a courageous commentator who will roam where the best cartoon takes you?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you may be the voice we are looking for. The Sunday Times is parting ways with Zapiro, South Africa’s beloved cartoonist whose political commentary has been a feature of our pages for many years. Zapiro has made South Africans laugh, cry and smile with wry amusement with his take on the major events of the day.
Unfortunately, that relationship, which lasted for two decades, comes to an end this month. Zapiro’s contract with the Sunday Times will not be renewed when it expires at the end of the month after the two parties could not agree on new terms.
While we are sad to see Zapiro leave, we see it as an opportunity to make space for new voices, who will draw and work exclusively for the Sunday Times.
If you think you have what it takes to step into Zapiro’s shoes, please send a portfolio of your work to smutss@tisoblackstar.co.za by March 16.
