MUSIC TO DOWNLOAD THIS WEEK
Twin Shadow — Saturdays
The synth-rock muso, above, returns to his roots with this deliciously catchy track featuring HAIM. After the disastrous attempt at commercial success that was his third album, Eclipse, it sounds like Shadow is once again making the music he wants to, rather than the music he’s “supposed” to.
Sun-El Musician — Bamthathile
He had one of the biggest hits last year with Akanamali (with Samthing Soweto). This time featuring Mlindo the Vocalist, his new tune is about lost love and is another one you can expect to hear everywhere.
Janelle Monáe — Make Me Feel
This could be the song that catapults the multi-talented performer to commercial success. It’s sexy, catchy and has touches of Monáe’s late mentor, Prince. The video, reminiscent of Black Mirror’s “San Junipero” episode, is also worth several watches.
ALBUMS Charlotte Day Wilson — Stone Woman EP
As we wait for the Canadian chanteuse, above, to release an album, we have this exquisite EP to enjoy. She has a smoky, soulful voice and makes some sexy, emotive music to kick back and enjoy some wine to.
Nadia Rose — Highly Flammable EP
Full disclosure: this came out in 2017 but we’ve only just come across it. Aside from less than a handful of women, male British rappers get all the attention. Rose is refreshing, her flow is breezy but fierce, and her tunes are quirky.
Denise Zimba — Rude EP
It’s easy to be sceptical when someone known for something else (acting, modelling etc) releases music. TV presenter and actress Zimba actually has a great voice, and she makes R&B/ hip-hop to shag to after getting turnt at KONG. SZA fans might enjoy this.
