Singer Zikhona’s perfect Sunday

Zikhona, singer

-

I'm not an early riser, so you'll usually find me snuggled in bed a while longer than all the other days of the week. This is mostly because I don’t have to worry about my alarm ringing in my ear when I clearly do not feel like getting up.

I then make myself a giant cup of coffee, sipping it while sitting on my balcony. It overlooks the Helderfontein Estate — or what I would call my dream houses.

Energised from that dose of caffeine, I’m ready to fix myself a Gordon Ramsay-inspired breakfast (which obviously includes extra bacon) while enjoying soothing gospel music in the background. Then my OCD kicks in — which means it’s time to clean up! I like neat and organised spaces.

Sundays are great for buying furniture from my favourite thrift stores. I love to decorate my apartment. This includes brightening up my living room with beautiful, fresh roses from the local market and hanging up abstract paintings on my walls, which I find extremely therapeutic.

At about noon it’s time to step out and treat myself at the hair and nail bar. I usually don’t have enough time to pamper myself during the week because I’m swamped with work. Nothing makes me feel better than spoiling myself.

Sunday afternoons are usually for hair appointments (and maybe some guilty shopping sprees). I frequently change my hairstyle. I think it goes with my personality — I don’t like to get too comfortable. If I’m not up to spending a whole day at the salon to do braids, I settle with a deep conditioning treatment and adding some curls for that extra bounce.

While my hairdresser is giving me a makeover I’m either getting a manicure or reading the relationship advice in a women’s magazine. I’m curious to find out why we act in certain ways when dating. I also manage to sneak in a few before and after selfies for my social media pages (another guilty obsession) along with a #NewHairDontCare hashtag.

Now that I’m feeling pretty, my car needs just as much pampering as I do, so I’ll head off to the car wash. While I’m waiting for the car to get washed, I’ll find the nearest Food Truck that sells traditional food, from pap and stew to bunny chows and boerie rolls with extra relish.

Around sunset is the perfect time to start the evening listening to live music with friends at the Orbit Jazz Club & Bistro in Braamfontein, while enjoying a glass of red wine.

As my Sunday evening comes to an end, I head home, run a bubble bath and relax, while reading Gabrielle Union’s We’re

Going to Need More Wine. I’m drawn to an inspirational read. Then I get in my favourite pink PJs, curl up on my sofa and when I’m not watching a singing reality show I’m catching up on my favourite series — bingeing on Grey’s Anatomy at the moment.

To end off my perfect Sunday I have long conversations over the phone with my parents, chatting about all that I get up to in the “city of gold”. I always cherish hearing their voices.
