In 2016, a British chef named Ben Sumadiwiri­aopy claimed to have gone temporaril­y deaf after he ate the “world’s hottest noodles” at a hole-in-the-wall eatery in Jakarta, Indonesia. The dish, 100 bird’s eye chillies crushed into a bowl of instant noodles and dubbed “Death Noodles“, has a Scoville rating of 20 million. Tabasco, by comparison, scores 5 000 on the scale.
