LOCATION
In the quiet and desirable enclave where Sea Point meets Bantry Bay, where the sound of seagulls mewling at night and the smell of the sea will be the backdrop to your dreams.
STYLE
It’s a boutique hotel in Cape Town style: lots of clean lines, glass and airy interiors. It’s also thoroughly modern, in keeping with the St Tropez theme — the hotel even refers to it — that runs through this neighbourhood.
SERVICE
The staff were unfailingly polite and helpful. I arrived late at night yet they were on hand to welcome me and make me feel at home. It says much for the hotel’s ethos that many of the staff are graduates of the Rainbow Academy, which uplifts and trains disadvantaged Western Cape youth in the arts and tourism.
HOW’S THE GRUB?
I arrived too late for dinner at The Atlantic Restaurant but had a late-night snack of a seafood basket at Freddie’s Bar and Garden Terrace — which, given the late hour — I had to myself. It was very good.
ACTIVITIES
The Sea Point promenade, one of Cape Town’s greatest treasures, begins almost at the hotel’s doorstep. A walk along it in the early morning is worth the price of staying on the Atlantic Seaboard. Even if promenading is not your thing, the hotel enjoys an unbeatable location close to the Atlantic beaches and Sea Point, the Table Mountain cableway and the Waterfront. It’s also close to the N1 and N2 access routes, yet it’s utterly quiet.
FACILITIES
The deluxe suites are open plan with dining and living areas. There is a comprehensive minibar and the usual tea and coffee facilities in a well-equipped kitchenette.
The luxury suites — some of which are duplexes — and the penthouse suites have even better views of the sea or Lion’s Head. The uncapped wifi is free and fast.
RATES
From R2 990 in a deluxe suite. Current specials include a corporate deal from R1 590 per person per night, and a family deal from R1 690 for two adults and two kids under 12.
