The Staatsmodelskool (SMS), built by President Paul Kruger in 1896 and refurbished by Lord Milner, opens as Pretoria High School. It becomes Pretoria College in 1903, moves to the current site in 1909 and is renamed Pretoria Boys High School. The SMS, declared a national monument in 1960, serves as PoW camp for British officers during the Anglo-Boer War. Winston Churchill, captured as a war correspondent, escapes from there on December 12 1899. The picture shows him (on Pony Bettmann) soon thereafter
