Boxing greats
Vic Toweel
Any debate on South Africa’s greatest boxer of all time must include the Benoni Atom, Vic Toweel, the country’s only undisputed world champion, who won the crown in just his 14th professional fight.
Brian Mitchell
Mitchell started out as one of three world junior lightweight champions when he won the WBA version in 1986. He defended the belt successfully 12 times, all abroad, and engaged in a drawn unification bout he should have won. He relinquished his belt to win the IBF title.
Vuyani Bungu
Bungu defended his IBF junior featherweight title 13 times, from 1994 to 1999, a South African record.
Dingaan Thobela
Thobela won the WBO lightweight crown in 1990 and the WBA belt in 1993. He ballooned to super middleweight class, where he took the WBC crown in 2000.
Hekkie Budler
The first South African to hold two major titles simultaneously.
