Going the whole retro hog
Porsche is honouring racers of yesteryear at the 2018 24-Hours of Le Mans sports car endurance race (June 16 to 17 ). Two of its factory-backed 911 RSRs will run in classic liveries last seen at the circuit in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The No.92 car will be licked in the famous “Pink Pig” design that graced a 917 in 1971, while No.91 will sport the Rothmans paintwork first worn by the 956 back in 1982.
R you ready for it?
The next Golf R could be pushing out close to 300kW, according to Volkswagen’s sales and marketing chief, Jürgen Stackmann. In a recent interview with British car magazine Auto Express, Stackmann said, “The R brand is going extreme. The role of R is that it can go beyond the rational; nobody needs a compact car with 300kW, but is there a place for it? Certainly, and that’s the turf of R.” Wowzers.
Return of the alpha dog
Alfa Romeo is busy working on an all-new 8C: a sports car that was discontinued in 2010. Set to be unveiled in 2022, this redux will feature a carbon-fibre chassis and a mid-mounted turbocharged V6 tuned to deliver around 520kW. The front axle will be driven by an electric motor. Expect a 0-100km/h time of under three seconds.
