The amount, in pounds and shillings, that each of passengers paid for the passage from Jamaica and Trinidad to Tilbury Dock in London aboard the ship EmpireWind­rush 70 years ago.

When the ship docked at Tilbury on June 22 1948, among the more than the one thousand passengers aboard there were 492 immigrants — other sources say 802 — whose arrival would help transform the country. Among the passengers was Sam King, founder of the Notting Hill Carnival and future Mayor of Southwark, who had served in England with the wartime RAF.

The anniversar­y is to be marked with celebratio­ns at the cruise terminal at Tilbury.
