Q&A with novelist Zandile Khumalo, whose novel uNtsika Ezweni Lesethembiso has been published by Kwasukela Books.

Congratulations! What does it mean to you to be published in isiZulu? I was thrilled to get a chance to finally write something in isiZulu — my love for storytelling came from the language.

Can you tell us a little about it? And what does the title mean?

uNtsika Ezweni Lesethembiso is about two siblings who find their way back to each other after they’ve fallen victim to an incident that threatens to wipe out their whole family. The title basically means “Ntsika In The Promised Land”. It’s a young adult novel, but it’s also historical fiction set in 1500-1600 SA. Did you research in order to write the story? I’ve used every opportunity to research, so I’ve come across interesting facts. One thing always leads to the other as far as information gathering goes and that makes it fun.
