Amnesty International was born in 1961 after British lawyer Peter Benenson, outraged at the jailing of two Portuguese students for raising a toast to freedom, launched a campaign that provoked a worldwide response and sparked the idea that people everywhere can unite in solidarity for justice and freedom. Amnesty is now a global movement with more than 7-million members in more than 150 countries and territories who campaign to end abuses of human rights
