Gals -- and guys -- about town ogle the jewellery

Sunday Times - - News The A-listers -

● She might be fingered as unbolting a jar of evil into the world in Greek mythology, but ask a trendy gal today about Pandora and chances are she will gush about shiny trinkets like bracelets, rings and necklaces.

And on a balmy Thursday evening I found myself at one of Joburg’s more elegant venues, the Munro boutique hotel in oh-so-old-world Houghton, to ogle the shiny stuff instead of wreaking havoc.

Walking up to the entrance of the swish mansion, I am welcomed by the night’s host, actress Thembisa Mdoda, who is resplendent in a white cocktail dress with one shoulder of ruffled sleeves.

Through the hallway and onto the terrace, a violinist lulls us with soothing notes, the front of her dress flowing over the pool to morph into the red carpet.

Nice touch.

Then it’s a quick hello to gal about town Taryn Louch and Roxy Burger, who tells me her little bub Adrienne is “the most chilled girl in the world”.

Someone who can’t stand still even if she tried is actress Nomzamo Mbatha, who is clearly hogging the A-Listers — not only does the

UNHCR ambassador grace this page’s other event, but she and her roses bloomed on our front page last week.

But then, with the actress’s assets on full display in a revealing MaXhosa gown, why not?

“I’m breastfeeding,” she says cheekily.

Back to the proceedings, and when Thembisa climbs on stage and welcomes us an hour later, Anele Mdoda’s older sis admits she was one of the few women not charmed by jewels until the Danish jeweller reached out to her.

Now she’s hooked — dropping hints that she’d like “two of each” of the new bracelets Pandora was showcasing.

Guests including The Morning Show host Tino Chinyani, waif-like TV presenter K Naomi and former Big Brother Mzansi housemates Mbali Nkosi and Blue Mbombo nod in agreement before we head off around the villa to view the jewels, with surprises like green-leafed human topiaries coming alive as we walk past. Cute night. CJ
