India enjoys surrogate baby boom

Commercial surrogacy was legalised in 2002 in India, where, thanks to medical infrastruc­ture, potential surrogates and internatio­nal demand, the industry has boomed. Surrogate mothers there receive medical, nutritiona­l and health care through surrogacy agreements. In SA, no money can be exchanged for surrogacy. However, prospectiv­e parents are expected to pay for life insurance and the medical bills of their surrogate mothers
