Hair deal’s the crowning glory for baby
● A Japanese baby who has amassed 300,000 followers on social media because of her luscious locks has been signed up as the new face of a global hair product.
At just one year old, Chanco Kano has joined the ranks of celebrities who have been signed up by Pantene.
She will appear in the company’s advertising campaign in Japan, according to People magazine.
“I’m so surprised with the reaction, but also very proud of the praise from many countries,” her mother, Mami Kano, told the magazine.
The appointment has received mixed reviews, with some on Twitter branding Chanco “#hairgoals”, while others have wondered if it is appropriate.
“We went straight to her mother because Chanco’s personality and special character matches our image for women we want to support,” said Yoshiaki Okuraa, from Pantene’s maker Procter & Gamble.
For the campaign, Pantene created a video, The Hairy Tales, to tell the toddler’s story.
Pantene said diversity mattered, which was why it had chosen Chanco as its newest star after she garnered attention for her hair.
Whether a baby will be born with hair like Chanco’s is influenced by genetics and ethnicity, according to Dr Bud Zukow, a paediatrician speaking to Hairfinder.com.
A baby’s hair as an infant bears little resemblance to what it will look like as they grow older. Some babies emerge from the womb with a thick head of hair, but they also might lose it in a matter of weeks.
