France produces about 50 tons of truffles a year, according to French travel and culture website thelocal.fr. Truffle hunters may use pigs to help them sniff out these treasures but dogs are more commonly used these days. Each animal is accompanied “by a truffle farmer or harvester who collects the fungi, making sure that none get eaten along the way”.
