TOYOTA FORTUNER 2.8 GD-6 4x4 (automatic)
ABOUT IT
This ubiquitous Japanese fixture on local roads needs no introduction. You would have seen throngs of the model lined-up at various tollgates while trekking from inland to coast. Why are families so faithful to the Fortuner? The answers are simple. For starters, consider the equity of the badge — and the assurance of that vast Toyota dealership network. The value-for-money aspect is high: spaciousness, competence on rough terrain and a healthy list of goodies, even in the entry-level car, are on the list of merits.
WHERE I WENT
During December many regions of Gauteng resemble scenes from I Am Legend, the film starring Will Smith. Not for the threat of flesheating zombies, obviously — but because of a distinct lack of activity and presence of people. Which is fantastic. A perfect paradox, really: if you want to escape the madness of it all, just stay put in the quietness of Johannesburg. That is exactly what I did. Although there were multiple visits to the openness of the countryside, including Heidelberg and Muldersdrift, for a bit of fresh air.
PRAISES AND GRIPES
An empowering feeling it is, piloting a product so sturdy and robust in nature. The dependable character of the Fortuner proved soothing to the conscience. It also assisted in navigating the waters of a quarter-life crisis, which was more melodrama than real murk.
My 26th birthday saw an impulsive springclean, where the cavernous rear of the Toyota was loaded with shelves, books, toys and a cricket bat “signed by Brian Lara” — my grandfather (RIP) had a strange sense of humour. What was annoying was the slowness of the electrically-operated tailgate.
And it must be said that the relationship to the Hilux pick-up is far too apparent on the tarmac, where a plusher ride quality would be welcomed. There was also the anxiety associated with being the custodian of a product so popular that some would resort to malevolent means to procure it.
